Wongwian Yai Railway Station – Bangkok Life Along the Tracks

There are places in Bangkok where the railway is not separated from everyday life — it becomes part of it. Wongwian Yai Station is one of those places, where the railway line runs directly through the surrounding neighbourhood and the rhythm of the city continues just a few steps from the tracks.

In this frame, the front of an SRT train dominates the scene, while passengers and local shoppers move along the narrow platform beside it. The colourful orange and blue locomotive contrasts strongly with the weathered buildings, tangled cables, small shops and everyday activity of the neighbourhood.

Wongwian Yai is the Bangkok starting point of the Wongwian Yai–Mahachai railway line, operated by the State Railway of Thailand. The route connects Bangkok with Mahachai and passes through stations such as Talat Phlu and Wutthakat.

What attracted me as a photographer was precisely this mixture of railway, street life and ordinary Bangkok. There is nothing staged here. People are simply going about their day while the train occupies almost the entire frame — creating a moment that feels distinctly local and very different from the modern image of Bangkok dominated by skyscrapers and BTS trains.

For travel and documentary photography, these are often the scenes I look for: Bangkok as it is lived rather than simply visited.
