Bangkok at Night – Motorcycles, City Buses and the Rhythm of the Street

At a Bangkok intersection after dark, several worlds of urban transportation come together in a single frame. A classic red-and-cream city bus passes behind a line of motorcycles waiting at the traffic light, while riders and passengers pause for a few seconds before the city begins moving again.

What makes this scene interesting to me is the contrast between the old and the new. The large city bus represents one of Bangkok's familiar forms of public transportation, while the scooters and motorcycles in the foreground reflect the speed and flexibility of everyday travel through the city. Helmets, headlights, colourful clothing and the strong red of the bus give the photograph a distinctly urban character.

I was drawn to the scene because nothing needed to be arranged. This is simply Bangkok street life as it happens. The traffic light creates a brief pause, giving me the opportunity to observe the riders, the bus and the surrounding city before everything starts moving again.

For me, documentary photography is often about exactly these moments. Not the famous landmark, but the people and transportation systems that keep a city alive long after sunset. This is Bangkok at night from street level — busy, practical, colourful and constantly moving.
