Life on the Mekong – A Traditional Riverboat Passing Luang Prabang, Laos

The Mekong River is one of the defining elements of life in Luang Prabang. From the water, the landscape opens up in a completely different way: a long, colorful wooden riverboat moves steadily along the river, while forest-covered hills rise behind the opposite bank.

What immediately caught my attention was the boat itself. Its blue, white and red-painted hull stands out against the earthy tones of the Mekong and the surrounding green landscape. The long, open passenger area and simple construction reflect the practical character of river transportation in this part of Laos.

I photographed the scene from the river, which gives the image a sense of movement and perspective. The wake behind the boat adds another element to the composition, while the large expanse of water in the foreground emphasizes just how important the Mekong is to the landscape.

For me as a travel and documentary photographer, travelling on the Mekong is about experiencing Laos from a different perspective. Away from the temples and streets of Luang Prabang, the river reveals another side of the country — boats, mountains, riverside communities and everyday movement along one of Southeast Asia's great waterways.
