Bangkok After Dark – A Songthaew Ride Through the Streets of Thailand

Bangkok at night is not only about skyscrapers and neon lights. Sometimes the real character of the city can be found much closer to the street, in the everyday vehicles that carry people through the traffic. This red songthaew, with its open rear seating area, colourful lights and well-used metalwork, immediately caught my attention.

Inside, a passenger is absorbed in her phone while the city continues moving around her. Behind the vehicle, headlights, reflections and illuminated signs blend into the humid Bangkok night. The wet pavement adds another layer to the scene, reflecting the red bodywork and surrounding lights.

As a travel and documentary photographer, these are the moments I particularly enjoy photographing. There is no famous landmark here and nothing staged. Instead, the photograph is about everyday Bangkok street life — public transport, people, traffic and the atmosphere of the city after sunset.

The strong red colour of the songthaew dominates the frame, while the passenger provides the human element. For me, this is one of the most interesting sides of Bangkok photography: looking beyond the skyline and finding stories in ordinary moments on the street.
