Kuang Si Waterfalls Near Luang Prabang – Turquoise Pools in the Forest of Laos

Deep in the lush forest outside Luang Prabang, the water of Kuang Si Waterfalls flows over a series of natural limestone terraces, creating one of the most distinctive landscapes in northern Laos. The silky streams of water fall gently from one level to the next before collecting in the striking turquoise pools below.

What caught my attention here was the combination of movement and stillness. Using a longer exposure transforms the falling water into soft, flowing curtains, while the surrounding trees remain sharp and provide a strong natural frame. The turquoise pool adds another layer to the composition, contrasting beautifully with the deep greens and earthy tones of the forest.

I deliberately included the tree in the foreground. It gives the photograph depth and helps place the waterfall within its natural environment rather than presenting it simply as an isolated cascade. The layered limestone formations also create a natural rhythm that leads the eye through the image.

For me as a travel and documentary photographer, Kuang Si Falls represents another side of Laos. Away from the temples, markets and riverboats of Luang Prabang, the landscape becomes the story — forest, limestone, flowing water and the extraordinary colours created by nature.
