Working the Market – A Seafood Vendor at Photisarn Market in Pattaya

Inside Photisarn Market in North Pattaya, the camera catches a vendor in the middle of his work. Wearing a dark apron and protective glove, he handles fresh seafood over large stainless-steel bowls while the market continues moving around him. His concentration gives the photograph a quiet intensity, even though the scene itself is full of activity.

What caught my attention was the combination of the human element and the market environment. His tattooed arm, the worn apron, metal bowls and cooking equipment tell a story of physical work, while the brightly lit shelves behind him are filled with bottles, packaged food and other market products.

The shallow depth of field helps separate him from the busy background, but I deliberately kept enough of the surroundings visible to make the location unmistakable. The warm artificial light also adds a different atmosphere to the scene compared with photographing the market during daylight.

For me, this is documentary photography at its most straightforward: watching people at work and allowing the moment to unfold naturally.
