Inside Photisarn Market – Everyday Food and Local Life in Pattaya, Thailand

Inside Photisarn Market in North Pattaya, the daily rhythm of a Thai food market unfolds in front of my camera. Vendors prepare food, customers move between the stalls, and tables are filled with fresh ingredients, vegetables, mushrooms, sauces and ready-to-eat dishes. In the middle of all this activity, a vendor briefly looks directly toward the camera.

What attracted me to this scene was the sheer amount of detail. The colourful baskets, stainless-steel pots, plastic containers, handwritten prices and Thai-language signs create a visual record of how a local market really looks and feels. Nothing has been arranged for the photograph — the composition comes entirely from the natural activity around me.

The man in the foreground becomes the visual anchor of the image, while the woman working beside him and the many vendors behind them create several layers of everyday life. I particularly like the way the market continues far into the background, making the photograph feel larger than just a portrait of one person.

For me as a travel and documentary photographer, Photisarn Market represents the Pattaya I enjoy photographing most. Away from the tourist centres, this is where ordinary life happens — people working, cooking, shopping and sharing food. These unscripted moments are what give my photographs their connection to Thailand and its people.
