Fresh from the Market – A Vegetable Vendor at Photisarn Market in Pattaya

At Photisarn Market in North Pattaya, a local vendor reaches toward my camera and proudly presents a large, freshly selected carrot. It is a simple interaction, but it immediately creates a connection between photographer and subject. Her direct gaze and the vegetable held prominently in the foreground make the moment feel spontaneous and personal.

What makes this photograph particularly interesting to me is the environmental portrait. I wanted to keep the market around her rather than isolating her from the surroundings. The pumpkins, limes, vegetables, baskets, food packaging and other shoppers all remain visible, giving the portrait a strong sense of place.

The bright blue of her clothing contrasts beautifully with the orange carrot and the yellow flesh of the pumpkin in the foreground. These colours are not something I had to create or arrange — they are simply part of the visual richness you encounter when walking through a Thai market with a camera.

For me as a travel and documentary photographer, this is what street photography in Thailand is really about. A brief exchange with a market vendor can become a photograph that says something about the people, food and everyday rhythm of a place.
